    What was that about investing in our crumbling infrastructure, again?

    I ask because a water main somewhere in Montgomery County, Maryland, ruptured today and washed out much of my day. Though my experience was nothing compared to what some people had to deal with.

    It's a man's, man's, man's meltdown alright, but it's one that wouldn't have been if some of the men in charge had listened to their female colleagues. And it may be a man's, man's, man's recovery if women's voices aren't heard and their concerns not explicitly included in an economic recovery.

    Every once in a while, an idea gels in my head and I dismiss it, thinking to myself "Nah. I gotta be missing something. It can't be that. And then I hear someone who probably knows a lot more than I do about the subject at hand say pretty much what I'd been thinking all along.

    After following this year's economic news, it's as though someone pulled back a curtain and revealed our economy to be little more than a floating game of craps.

    The winding down of the dark age of W feels like something like a long night's journey into day. (Apologies to Eugene O'Neill.) Granted, Republicans are doing everything they can on their way out to make sure the light at the end of the tunnel is indeed a train. (More on that later.) But the world's response to the incoming Obama administration is a nice reminder of what it's like to live in a world where people are actually glad to see us when we show up.

    As John Kerry put it when he dropped by the United Nations' climate conference.

    Bush has not "kept us safe," nor made us any safer than we were. He has left us unprepared.

    In a previous post we explored the spectacle of George W. Bush bungling through an attempt at an expression of remorse — this time over the state of the economy — as only he can. It's what you'd expect from a guy who believed he was on a mission from God, and has watched it go horribly wrong.

    He still has to "Keep the faith," and convince himself that all is pretty much as it should be, close enough, or well on its way there.

    But the rest of us don't.
